OVERVIEW
GSL Water Sdn Bhd was awarded the tender for the privatisation of two water treatment facilities at Gunung Semanggol and Taiping in 1989 by the State Government of Perak Darul Ridzuan. A 25-year concession agreement was signed in October 1989 and GSL Water took over operations of Gunung Semanggol and Taiping Headworks water treatment facilities on 1 November 1989.
The existing shareholders for GSL Water are:
- Gopeng Berhad
- SISMA Water Technology Sdn Bhd
- Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux
Taiping Headworks began producing water for the Taiping town since the early 1900s and is believed to be the oldest water treatment plant in Perak. It continues to supply water to Taiping and sources its raw water from 5 mountain streams located 0.5km - 5.0 km away.
Gunung Semanggol water treatment facilities were built in various stages is now able to meet the growing demand well beyond year 2000. It' source of raw water is the 7000 acres Bukit Merah Lake which mainly serves the irrigation needs to rice fields in the district of Kerian. |
